Acids For Flawless Skin - Without A Science Degree. All About The Acid Trinity.

Have you ever over exfoliated your skin with a physical exfoliator leaving your skin tight, polished, shiny and burning? Here's how you can avoid this.

Hearing things like " Chemical Exfoliant " and " Acids " would always make me raise a brow when I would hear about or the first time. Our bodies naturally take care of cell turnover [exfoliate ] but as we age, the process significantly slows down which is when the Acid Trinity comes in handy.

Here's a breakdown of 3 different acids [ In a nutshell ]

AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acids

  • Water-soluble acid

  • Exfoliates the skin to promote cell renewal

  • Reduces appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven texture

  • Seals moisture in the skin and provides a healthy glow

  • Treats sun damage, hyperpigmentation and evens out the skin tone

  • Small molecular size

  • Great choice for dry / or mature skin

Glycolic Acid for anti-aging and brightening effects. [ slowly introduce this one! ]

Lactic Acid if you want to prevent dryness with anti-aging, moisturizing, brightening effects and help improve skin texture. [ Great for sensitive skin ]

BHA or Beta Hydroxy Acid

  • Oil-soluble acid

  • Exfoliates the skin to promote cell renewal

  • Calming properties

  • Penetrates deep into pores to dissolve sebum, blackheads and acne

  • Small molecular size

  • Helps treat acne, blackheads & milia

  • Suitable for oily, acne prone skin

Salicylic Acid is the most popular one found in formulas used for spot treatments and isn't usually stripping.

PHA or Poly Hydroxy Acids

  • Water-Soluble acid

  • Exfoliates the skin to promote cell renewal

  • Is like an antioxidant

  • Seals in moisture in the skin

  • Molecular size is larger [ only exfoliates the skins surface ]

  • Great alternative for people with sensitive skin and rosacea

Due to molecular size, this acid is optimal at renewing the skin without any irritation.

If you find AHAs and BHAs too strong, PHAs are the way to go, it will even decrease your skin's sensitiviy and moisturize your skin.

Even the most sensitive skin types can benefit from this one such as people with eczema, rosacea as well as dry skin.

Because acids are working hard to exfoliate the skin's surface and beneath, your skin will be more vulnerable to the sun so another important thing to note is PLEASE apply SPF [ If you are using any of these in your morning routine ]

Hope this helps!
